Dr. Joseph Downes : Your Lowell Chiropractor
“I was a skeptic,” admits Dr. Joseph Downes. An appointment was made for me to see a local chiropractor, Dr. Alan Soloment, for a back injury I suffered playing high school football. I was reluctant but upon the insistence of my parents.

“It was incredible,” continues Dr. Downes. “I’ll never forget that first adjustment. It was as if a huge weight was suddenly lifted from my shoulders.
A few years later I was experiencing headaches while boxing in the U.S. Army. Finding no relief from dispensary care, I treated with chiropractor Dr. William King in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. King was able to resolve my headaches in a few visits and the headaches never returned. That’s when I decided I wanted to be a chiropractor.”
Dr. Downes graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. During his four years at Palmer, courses included biochemistry, a major emphasis on neurology, anatomy and human physiology, X-ray, diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care in the Palmer College Public Clinic. After graduating from Palmer, Dr. Downes returned to Lowell and established his chiropractic practice in Pelham, New Hampshire. During this time he continued his education and earned his Bachelor of Science degrees in Life Sciences as well as a Masters of Science degree in Clinical Psychology from the New York Institute of Technology. He regularly attends continuing education courses to stay current with the changes in the health industry.
In 1977, he opened Downes Chiropractic at its current location 1201 Westford Street in Lowell, Massachusetts. Since then he has helped thousands of people get back to healthy living.
He has proudly served as a Past Chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Chiropractors and Past President of the Merrimack Valley Chiropractic Society. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management. He also currently serves as Vice President of the Friends of the Lowell Council on Aging , Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Massachusetts Athletic Commission's Boxing Division as well as the State Historian for the Massachusetts Ancient Order of Hibernians.
“I love skeptics,” smiles Dr. Downes. “I still remember the concerns and apprehension I had when I went to the chiropractor for the first time. So we make it a point to explain everything in advance, answer questions and attempt to over communicate. Patients appreciate that.”

Of course, should the condition fall outside the scope of chiropractic care, we will work with the patient to refer he/she to the appropriate care giver.
